City Enterprise Academy
City Enterprise Academy is a new Free School in pre-opening, with an anticipated opening date of September 2018. The Academy is a part of the City Learning Trust, which is committed to delivering a world class education for the learners that it serves across Stoke on Trent.
City Enterprise Academy is a new concept in alternative provision. Offering 100 places to young people, aged from 11-16 years, our school will combine a unique range of specialist support services, high quality teaching and learning, and a curriculum built around entrepreneurship. City Enterprise Academy will transform the way that young people engage with their secondary curriculum.
City Enterprise Academy will be an empowering alternative provision, that will provide a forward looking and innovative approach to all aspects of learning. The ethos of City Enterprise Academy is aspirational; a personalised education through an exciting, engaging curriculum, delivered by specialist staff with a developed knowledge and understanding of young people who have found mainstream education challenging.
Our curriculum will focus on learners achieving skills and qualifications which equip them for future success, by either enabling their positive reintegration into mainstream provision or onward progression. City Enterprise Academy will be inclusive in every aspect.
With an entrepreneurial specialism, we have already established strong business links in the city, which will be embedded into the curriculum. Our learners are risk-takers and brave; we intend to harness this energy and channel this skill into commerce, showing them the immediate profits for their efforts, thus inspiring them to invest in themselves.
As part of the exclusive employability diploma, learners will study English, maths and science along with business and ICT qualifications. All lesson content will be personalised to individual need and tailored to each learner’s interests to capture their imagination and encourage them to re-engage and achieve.
Business mentors from hundreds of local and national companies will support learners to achieve their goals. A programme of 1:1 support and work experience will enable young people to engage with the world of work and secure future employment through apprenticeships.
City Enterprise Academy is commissioned for 100 learners from across the city of Stoke-on-Trent.
Referrals will be taken from the Learning Pathways board as well as commissioners from out of the area.
Sian Hughes, Principal Designate has worked in education since 2003. Sian has considerable experience in removing barriers to learning and personalising curriculums in order to improve outcomes for young people.

‘I am exceptionally proud to be named as Principal Designate for City Enterprise Academy. In my new role, I will build on my experience of working with some of our Trust’s most challenging learners and the exceptional outcomes that we have achieved together. This dedicated provision will give me the opportunity to deliver, together with my new colleagues, a focused programme of learning which will improve the long- term outlook for all.’
